Required:
BECAUSE OF WINN DIXIE by Kate DiCamillo
April and her father move to a small town in Florida where she feels lonely and unhappy until rescuing an abandoned dog in the local grocery store. Winn Dixie (named after the store) becomes April’s avenue to meet the townspeople who prove to be far more interesting than she imagined.

Your assignment is to read two books. One is BECAUSE OF WINN DIXIE and the other is a book from the list above. You are to complete two book reports. Read the directions below and follow the instructions for writing the book reports.
I. Cover. Draw a picture of a scene from the book. Include the title, author, and
your name.
II. Complete a graphic organizer for the story
III. Write a summary of the story
A. First paragraph is the introduction. Include title, author, setting,
characters, genre, problem, and a statement to make me want to
read on.
B. Paragraph 2 and up - Write a summary. Do not use dialogue in your
summary. When you make a statement use details from the
story to back it up. Your summary has to be two typed, double-
spaced pages.
IV. After you write the summary, also write a three paragraph REVIEW.
A. Paragraph 1 – write the title and (make sure it is underlined or
in italics), author, genre, setting, theme, and characters.
B. Paragraph 2 – find a sentence, quotation, or an important line
in the story. Place it in quotation marks and explain why
you chose this statement and why it was important in the
book.
C. Paragraph 3 – Did you like the book? Why/Why not – explain.
The reports will count as a reading and writing grade and are due the first day of school.
